April McIlwaine

April McIlwaine is a graduate student at the University of Vermont, where she is pursuing a Masters in Food Systems. She holds a degree in Biology from SUNY Purchase, and was the recipient of the 2019 Weschester County Associations Women in Tech Award. She has worked on a number of urban organic farms and taught farm and environmental education to NYC youth through the educational non-profit City Growers.

Currently she works on the production team for New England Feeding New England, an initiative to increase regional self-reliance thirty percent by 2030, evaluating regional land use and considering land needs for the next generation of farmers.

Lua Piovano-Marcotte

April ultimately hopes to create avenues for local communities to engage and connect with their food systems in an interdisciplinary way, and is excited to see how her time with Vermont Folklife Center informs that work.

Lua Piovano-Marcotte is a third-year undergraduate student at Bennington College studying sociology, rural studies, and disability studies. As a lifelong fan of libraries, folklore, organization, and “old stuff,” she is very excited to be working with the VFC Archive. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing a number of string instruments, knitting and crocheting, and solving Rubik’s Cubes.
